Adi Shankaracharya (also written Shankara) was an Indian philosopher and monk who consolidated Advaita Vedanta, the teaching that the individual self (atman) and ultimate reality (Brahman) are one. He is traditionally said to have been born in Kalady, Kerala, and to have died in the Himalayas, with Kedarnath the commonly cited place. He wrote commentaries on the Brahma Sutras, the principal Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, and he founded or organised monastic centres (mathas) at Sringeri, Dwarka, Puri and Jyotirmath, along with the Dashanami order of monks.
Mahavtar Babaji revived the ancient practice of Kriya Yoga, originally described by Sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. Patanjali defined Kriya Yoga as self-discipline, self-study, and devotion to the Divine. Babaji expanded this path by incorporating tantric practices, including the awakening of Kundalini through breathing techniques, mantras, meditation, and devotion, creating a complete and practical system for spiritual growth.
Lahiri Mahasaya (1828–1895) was a revered Indian yogi and the foremost disciple of Mahavatar Babaji, who revived and spread the ancient science of Kriya Yoga in modern times. Through his teachings and initiation of thousands of disciples, Lahiri Mahasaya made Kriya Yoga widely accessible and laid the foundation for its global spread through his spiritual lineage.
Swami Sivananda (1887–1963) was one of India's most influential yoga masters and the founder of the Divine Life Society. He dedicated his life to making the ancient teachings of yoga accessible to everyone, emphasizing the integration of Karma Yoga (selfless service), Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Jnana Yoga (wisdom), and Raja Yoga (meditation).
Paramahansa Yogananda (1893–1952) was a renowned Indian yogi and spiritual master who introduced Kriya Yoga to the Western world. A direct disciple in the lineage of Mahavatar Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, and Sri Yukteswar, he founded the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) in 1920 to spread the teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga.
Swami Satyananda Saraswati (1923–2009) was a renowned yoga master and founder of the Bihar School of Yoga. A disciple of Swami Sivananda, he developed a systematic and scientific approach to yoga, integrating traditional practices with modern life. He popularized techniques such as Yoga Nidra, Kundalini Yoga, and Pawanmuktasana, making yoga accessible for physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual growth. His teachings continue to influence yoga practitioners and institutions around the world.
Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati (born 1960) is a respected yoga master and the spiritual successor of Swami Satyananda Saraswati. As the head of the Bihar School of Yoga, he has promoted a holistic and systematic approach to yoga that integrates physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual development.
